Companions

I knew he had already arrived at the rendezvous point because I could hear his voice among many voices in the hall. My heart beat and sank at the same time, for I was clueless about what to say or how to react on seeing him. How often do you bump into your ex-husband at a common friend’s family function? I braved to enter the party hall and found him talking to his friends. He immediately saw me. Perhaps he was nervous and waiting for me. I didn’t smile or wave. Why should I? He stared at me for few seconds and then he smiled. I couldn’t help but smile back at him. All the years of agony and grudges melted in a single moment of empathy that we both had for each other, for both were single and lonely at the age where one seeks a companion, who doesn’t necessarily have to be a spouse.

I did not know what to say to him but it was one thing that I felt at my heart, that was peace.
